Applying for an Employer Sponsored Visa: What You Need to Know
Designed to enable Australian employers to hire skilled overseas workers, an employer sponsored visa allows the individual to work and live in Australia permanently. However, there are four different employer sponsored visas to choose from. Below we take a closer look at each one, as well as the requirements that must be fulfilled.
1. Temporary Skill Shortage visa (subclass 482) – TSS
This replaced the Temporary Work (skilled) visa (subclass 457) in March 2018 and allows applicants to work and live in Australia on a temporary basis. The length of the visa and the applicant’s eligibility for permanent residency are dependent on their occupation, age and English level.
2. Employer Nomination Scheme (186)
This is an employer-nominated visa which grants permanent residency to you and your family, whether you’re eligible for the direct entry option or the temporary resident transition.
3. Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (187)
This is a permanent residency visa, and to qualify your sponsored employer must be located in a designated regional area. Your occupation must also be listed on the Regional Occupation list (ROL) or the MLTSSL, and you must have at least three years of full-time work experience. Some occupations will require you to complete a skills assessment.
4. Training visa (subclass 407)
This visa enables you to undertake on-the-job training while working for an Australian employer.
How do I know if I’m eligible?
You must meet certain criteria in order to be granted an employer sponsorship visa. Whether you’re already in Australia as a student or tourist or an Australian company wants to sponsor you, your eligibility depends on:
• The employer’s location and sponsorship approval
• The work experience you have (type and amount)
• Your post-secondary qualifications
• Your job title under the employer sponsorship
• The salary offered
